Adaptive Logics and the Integration of Induction and Deduction

چکیده

In this paper, I argue that it is typical of many scientific reasoning processes that they involve the integrated use of inductive and deductive steps. I moreover illustrate with examples from the sciences that the distinction between induction and deduction is context-dependent— an inference treated in one context as deductive may in a different context may be treated as inductive—and that their integration leads to interesting forms of dynamics. The main example concerns Clausius’ derivation of Carnot’s theorem from an inconsistent set of premises. Although this reasoning process involves no other inference rules than those validated by Classical Logic, it nevertheless exhibits many of the characteristics traditionally associated with inductive reasoning processes. Finally, I show how the integrated use of induction and deduction can be explicated in terms of adaptive logics, and illustrate this with adaptive logics for three main types of scientific reasoning: an inconsistency-adaptive logic, a logic of induction, and a logic of abduction.

EQ-logics with delta connective

In this paper we continue development of formal theory of a special class offuzzy logics, called EQ-logics. Unlike fuzzy logics being extensions of theMTL-logic in which the basic connective is implication, the basic connective inEQ-logics is equivalence. Therefore, a new algebra of truth values calledEQ-algebra was developed. This is a lower semilattice with top element endowed with two binary...

From inheritance relation to nonaxiomatic logic

Non-Axiomatic Reasoning System is an adaptive system that works with insu cient knowledge and resources. At the beginning of the paper, three binary term logics are de ned. The rst is based only on an inheritance relation. The second and the third suggest a novel way to process extension and intension, and they also have interesting relations with Aristotle's syllogistic logic. Based on the thr...

Providers and Patients Caught Between Standardization and Individualization: Individualized Standardization as a Solution; Comment on “(Re) Making the Procrustean Bed? Standardization and Customization as Competing Logics in Healthcare”

In their 2017 article, Mannion and Exworthy provide a thoughtful and theory-based analysis of two parallel trends in modern healthcare systems and their competing and conflicting logics: standardization and customization. This commentary further discusses the challenge of treatment decision-making in times of evidence-based medicine (EBM), shared decision-making and personalized medicine. From ...

Historical Development of Method in Science and Philosophy

The development and growth of science is based on method. Aristotle treated this issue seriously and formulated logic. Muslim thinkers accepted the comprehensibility of his idea and during some centuries developed it and exported to the west. During the last three centuries of the Middle Ages the issue of method was followed up seriously and induction enjoyed more importance. The scientific ...
